Cars in Germany's Town Found Smeared with Swastikas in Blood, Law Enforcement Confirm

Incident location Affected vehicle Local Police
Authorities reported they were notified by a individual who discovered a vehicle in Hanau covered with red-colored liquid

Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a statement.

Police report they were contacted late on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.

The substance had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Police then discovered multiple other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials state preliminary tests suggest the liquid was most likely blood from a person.

"Currently there is no lead as to where it came from; officials are not yet informed of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they stated.

Local authorities announced they were working "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the community for tips.

A high-ranking official said the attack made him without words and had to be resolved quickly.

"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on online, referring to the murder of nine people by a gunman targeting residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
