RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several entry passages leading to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of British forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," Healey added. "Including them were numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who endanger our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
