The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a test for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like standard body horror, but beneath Together exists a profound meditation about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.
